I know it's over already, but thought I'd share some fun facts
about fireworks with you...
Dreaming about fireworks means that you like to be the centre of attention and are showing off to others. It also symbolizes enthusiasm and exhilaration.

The fireworks were used to accompany many festivities, scare off evil spirits and promote prosperity.

The word for firework in Japanese, 'hanabi', which actually means "fire-flower".

A sparkler burns at a temperature over 15 times the boiling point of water. Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blowtorch. When your sparkler goes out, put it in a bucket of water.

Static electricity in synthetic clothing can set off firecrackers. People making firecrackers wear only cotton clothing while making firecrackers.

At first fireworks were only orange and white. In the Middle Ages new colours were achieved by adding different salts. The hardest colour to create is blue.

For every minute of every day, 1 billion tons of rain falls on the Earth.

The umbrella was originally invented to protect people from the hot sun.
The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra - which means shade.

Rain drops can fall at speeds of about 22 miles an hour. To take this into
perspective, a
snowflake falls at about 2-4 mph can take about 1 hour to finally
reach the ground.

All precipitation starts as ice or snow crystals at cloud level.

Water generally falls to earth at a low speed, this is because raindrops have a special shape that increases the effects of atmospheric friction and helps the rain come down to earth at a lower velocity. Imagine if we didn’t have friction acting on the falling rain, or that the shape that rain forms was different. Each drop would come crashing down to earth at great speeds and cause a lot of damage.

Ombrophobia – fear of rain or being rained on

Deep Thought of the Day:  Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains?

A leprechaun is a mischievous male fairy of Irish folklore.

We normally picture leprechauns in green suits today, but according to Gaelic tradition they used to wear red.  Older works of poetry and story always depict the leprechaun as wearing a red waistcoat. Some believe that solitary leprechauns wear red coats, while leprechauns who live in colonies wear green.

Legend says that leprechauns are the cobblers (or shoemakers) for all the fairy folk. They are often depicted with a leather apron, holding a shoe.  According to legend leprechauns are cobblers because they do so much dancing that they are constantly wearing out their shoes!

Each Leprechaun has his own pot of gold hidden at the end of a rainbow.  A leprechaun's stashes away one gold coin for each year of his life.  By this logic, you should hope to catch an old leprechaun!  To obtain the leprechaun's pot of gold, you must capture him and not take your eyes off him until you get your gold.  Fairy law requires the leprechaun to be honest with you if captured, but only for as long as you look him in the eye. It does not forbid tricks, only lying, but as soon as you look away the leprechaun can vanish, lie to you, or anything else he can dream up.

Leprechauns have a reputation for being foul-mouthed, are known to swig drink from their ceramic jugs, and smoke pipes that are quite foul smelling.

Roman Empire, Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter signing it, "From your Valentine."

Many believe the 'X' symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an 'X.'  The 'X' was then kissed to show their sincerity.

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve."

Physicians of the 1800's commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love.

15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

Approximately one billion Valentines are sent out worldwide each year -- second only to Christmas.

Top 10 New Year's Resolutions
  1. Spend more time with family and friends
  2. Get fit
  3. Tame the bulge
  4. Quit smoking
  5. Enjoy life more
  6. Quit drinking
  7. Get out of debt
  8. Learn something new
  9. Help others
  10. Get organized

Yup, sounds pretty right-on to me!!

A New Year's resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. A key element to a New Year's resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year and new beginnings. People committing themselves to a New Year's resolution generally plan to do so for the whole following year. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous.
The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts.
88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study's participants were confident of success at the beginning.

“To make 2013 your year, keep it simple:

1) Count your blessings first
2) Whatever you did last year, Do it better
3) Go step by step, One day at a time.
4) Create/make your own opportunities.
5) Believe in your abilities at all times,
6) Quitting is not an option. Keep Going.
7) Finish what you started”
Pablo

Now there are more overweight people in America than average-weight people. So overweight people are now average…
which means, you have met your New Year's resolution.  -Jay Leno
