Fun Facts about PUMPKINS ~

• In early colonial times, pumpkins were used as an ingredient for the crust of pies, not the filling.
• Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites.
• Antarctica is the only continent that they won't grow in.
• The self proclaimed  pumpkin capital is in Morton IL,
  where you'll find the home of the Libby corporation's pumpkin industry.
• Pumpkins are not vegetables... they’re fruits!
• Around 90 to 95% of the processed pumpkins in the United States are grown in Illinois.
• The top ten pumpkin producing counties in Illinois are Tazewell, Kankakee, Mason, Logan, Will, Marshall, Kane, Pike, Carroll and Woodford.
• In early colonial times, pumpkins were used as an ingredient for the crust of pies, not the filling.
• Colonists sliced off pumpkin tops; removed seeds and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. This was baked in hot ashes and is the origin of pumpkin pie.
• Native Americans flattened strips of pumpkins, dried them and made mats.
• Believe it or not, there are yellow, white, green, tan, red and blue pumpkins, out there.
• Pumpkin and/or pumpkin seeds are said to be home remedy for a variety of conditions such as acne, prostate problems and stomach ailments.
