Since we've had a freakishly warm winter, I searched out some
fun-winter facts, just because:

Every snowflake has six sides.

Snow is not white.
Snow is actually clear and colorless.
“The complex structure of snow crystals results in countless tiny surfaces from which visible light is efficiently reflected. What little sunlight is absorbed by snow is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light thus giving snow its white appearance.”
80% of all the freshwater on earth is frozen as ice or snow This accounts for 12% of the earth’s surface.

A blizzard occurs when you can’t see for 1/4 mile. The winds are always 35 miles an hour or more.  The storm must last at least 3 hours to be classed as a blizzard. If any of these conditions are less, it is only a snowstorm.

The USA averages 105 snow producing storms per year.
When it comes to larger, complex snowflakes, no two are alike
.
However, it’s possible that a “nano-snowflake,” a tiny flake with only a few molecules, could have a twin.
And something fun, for us original Chicago-folks:
The 1967 blizzard was one of Chicago's most bizarre weather events. On Jan. 24, the high temperature was 65, and there was a tornado watch. Two days later, a storm dropped 23.1 inches of snow in 29 hours.

But the Windy City is not easily intimidated. Seven hours after the storm began, with snow falling at a rate of about an inch an hour, 193 people showed up at
WGN-TV's studios for the "Bozo Show."
