April Fools
Did you know that before 1582, most people around the world did not celebrate January 1 as New Year's Day? Many ancient cultures celebrated the New Year on or around April 1.  The new year date was set as January 1st by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 and back then word didn't spread quite as quickly as it does now a days -- So, while many people were celebrating the new year in January, there were also many people sticking to the old traditions of celebrating the new year in April. Those who celebrated in April were referred to as "April Fools" and it is believed that they were ridiculed as well as made the butt of various other practical jokes.  Here are some of the better and more well known jokes that have been played in recent years:
  • In 1996, Taco Bell took out a full page ad in the New York Times claiming they purchased the Liberty Bell to "reduce the country's debt". They also claimed that they would be renaming it to the "Taco Liberty Bell".
  • In 1998 Burger King ran an ad in the USA Today, saying people could now order left-handed Whoppers. The funny part is that people actually ordered the new burgers, and some others requested the old right handed version.

  • In 2010, a TV show called The One Show from the UK, did a news story on "cloned unicorns".

  • In 1997, Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek switched hosting roles. Pat hosted Jeopardy and Alex hosted Wheel of Fortune.

  • In 2010, Google advertised a new "animal translator" which they would be adding to their other translations.
